Shocking news has emerged as actor Robin Williams died in his home today due to an apparent suicide. He was found unconscious, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s office, from what appears to be asphyxiation. The news has shaken not only the entertainment industry but beyond, as the famed actor had touched generations of audiences around the world. Known for the sheer amount of energy he was able to portray in his performances, both in his acting and comedic work, he has left an indelible mark. (Updated with a statement from Disney.)
Known best in the Disney community as the voice of Genie in Aladdin, the performance remains one of the greatest seen in an animated film. From the fast-paced jokes to the incredible delivery and timing, Genie was the true star of the film. Every single scene he appears in, he steals the spotlight. Seeing the animators keep up with him was a sight to behold, the single best representation being the “Friend Like Me” sequence. Williams was later named a Disney Legend for his turn as Genie and had the title officially bestowed upon him during the 2009 D23 Expo.
This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.
UPDATE (11:00 PM): Disney’s CEO Bob Iger just released the following statement:
We’re deeply saddened by the loss of Robin Williams, a wonderfully gifted man who touched our hearts and never failed to make us laugh. An incredible actor and a comedic genius, Robin will always be remembered for bringing some of the world’s favorite characters to life, from his zany alien on ABC’s Mork & Mindy to the irascible genie in Disney’s Aladdin. He was a true Disney Legend, a beloved member of our family, and he will be sorely missed. We join Robin’s friends and fans everywhere in mourning, and offer our thoughts and condolences to his family during this difficult time.
It is always difficult to process a tragic event such as this. What we can do is celebrate Robin Williams’ gift, which he shared through his great work. I leave you with “Friend Like Me,” which demonstrates just how exuberant and talented of a personality Williams was:
