Back in 2007, Enchanted turned out to be a surprise hit for Disney. The live-action tale, which also featured some of Disney’s last hand-drawn animation (2011’s Winnie The Pooh would feature the last), parodied many of the company’s famed princess films, but at the film’s center stood a story as sentimental as the ones it was poking fun at. Starring a then-less-known Amy Adams as the lovable Giselle, the film went on to gross just under $350 million worldwide. Seven years after its release, Disney is developing a sequel, and has hired screenwriters and a director to tackle the project!
Deadline reports that Disney has hired writers J. David Stem and David N. Weiss to work on the script. They have worked together for years and are responsible for writing the scripts for The Rugrats Movie, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Shrek 2, and most recently, both of the Smurfs films. While their output is certainly a mixed bag, they clearly are accustomed to working on family films. Hopefully, that experience will help translate into a quality story.
No other details about the sequel is known, including whether Adams would return. She has become a mainstay at the Oscars, receiving five nominations, and is considered one of the industry’s current greatest working actresses, which makes her that much more difficult to land for a sequel. It would be incredible if Disney were able to bring her back, especially since she was one of the main reasons why the first film was such a success (along with the cute story and catchy music). Still, it would shock no one if she proves too challenging to bring back.
No release date is attached to the film as of yet, but expect to hear more about Enchanted 2 in the coming years.
